Read on for our round-up of favourite items for thoughtful and sustainable gifting this Christmas for Mum and bubs!
]]>We all secretly want to be that person who gifts the most appreciated and thoughtful gift for Christmas. Or is that just us?
The problem is, you can scroll the internet (or shops, if you’re that adventurous) for days trying to find the one perfect item - that isn’t going to blow the budget.
We think the key to a thoughtful gift is something that someone can use, or will remember fondly, for a long time!
Which is why we wanted to highlight the importance of investing in not only thoughtful but sustainable gifts this year - and every year after. Gifts that have been not only created responsibly and sustainably but will last you and your child (and their children) years to come, without losing their charm and functionality.
Read on for our round-up of favourite items for this Christmas!
We couldn’t begin the list without mentioning a timeless toy, which spans the years from child to adult - a puzzle! Not only is it produced locally, the puzzles are made from recycled paper.

Their latest creation in a soft blush, the Mermaid Life Dolls Sleepsuit features a soft Dusty Rose print of adorable and unique illustrations of whales, mermaids and jellyfish.
Combining education with play is something Miniland do best with their anatomically and racially correct dolls. They have essentially created an important educational resource that is aimed to help children to comprehend the concepts of family, population groups, the basic rules of relationships and coexistence, respect for racial and sexual diversity. Their anatomically correct Asian Girl Doll, like all their dolls, is Phytalates-free vinyl and vanilla-scented to mimic the scent of a new-born baby!
Every little doll needs a place to rest after a hard day of play! Introducing Pretty in Pine Rainbow Dolls Bed, a gorgeous collaboration between Pretty in Pine and Society of Wanderers. The bed itself is created with 9mm raw 100% Hoop Pine plywood sourced from sustainable and renewable plantations in Southeast Queensland, while the bedding is made from pure linen, known for its sustainable production. ]]>Storage in any baby or kid’s bedroom can be a perpetual struggle. Particularly as kids’ bedrooms are often tight on space, things like toy storage can be a real nuisance. Here are a couple of clever ideas to keep kids’ bedrooms under control in ways that are not only functional but also beautiful.
Brightly coloured folding storage crates from Dove and Dovelet are a great storage option for kids’ rooms. Stack them inside a wardrobe or outside as freestanding extra storage. What’s more, they are available in a bunch of eye-catching colours, so they’ll match your décor, or your can mix and match them for a fun, colourful bedroom feature.
Decorative storage baskets are another great option for kids’ toy storage and other bits and pieces you’re keen to hide away. Lidded baskets from the brand OlliElla Neutra are a fantastic example. These stylish hand-made, fair-trade baskets come in different sizes perfect for the storage of all sorts of things from toiletries to laundry to toys and shoes.
With the creative use of things like beanbags and play mats, you can create spaces within spaces, such as inviting reading corners in older kids’ bedrooms or dedicated play spaces for younger kids. Popular tip: play mats make a handy, washable rug alternative when creating a reading nook for older kids.
Mix and match from our range of colourful play mats and our selection of velvet and canvas beanbags to create your own cozy reading or play nook. For older kids, perhaps combine the Flight Path round play mat from Kip&Co with its wonderful map of the world pattern and a Tarzan, leopard-print beanbag for a bit of excitement. For younger kids, perhaps pair a May Gibbs Flora and Fauna patterned play mat from Kip&Co and a Koala Doze canvas beanbag, with it’s super cute koala face pattern, to create a playful little den.
The art of bed layering with a mix of baby blankets, doonas and cushions is the perfect way to create a cozy, sleep-inducing atmosphere for babies and kids. Plus, it provides a practical method for incrementally adjusting for kids’ comfort as seasons and temperatures change.
Mix and match from our great range of double-sided quilts, quilted bedspreads, organic cotton quilted and 100% wool baby blankets, and beautiful decorative and fun shaped cushions to bring your own style to bed layering. Plus, with every piece sourced from top brands like Society of Wanderers and Kip&Co, you know they have the quality to last.
Add a snuggly blanket and cuddly cushion to your reading or play nook for that extra warmth and comfort.
If you’re looking for practical and comfortable all-year-round bedding that’s both warm in winter and cool summer, linen is an excellent choice.
And when it comes to choosing the best linen bedding, we recommend the Society of Wanderers brand. Society of Wanderers makes a gorgeous range of 100% French flax linen bedding for both kids and adults, including fitted sheets, pillowcases and quilt covers.
Famous for their bright, stylish and contemporary colours and designs, you can mix and match from a wide variety of prints and styles.
But wait, there’s more to the Society of Wanderers’ range than just the best in linen sheets, pillowcases and duvee covers. They bring their same wonderful sense of style to their range of women’s linen pyjamas and even gorgeous linen tote bags.

When it comes to baby and kids’ sleepwear, swaddles and sleep bags, merino is really the pick of the flock when it comes to natural fibres and fabrics. It really comes down to five key factors – it’s warm, soft, breathable, safe and all natural. And with it’s renowned temperature-regulation and sweat-wicking properties, superfine merino is the perfect fabric not just for winter but all year round, inside and out.
The natural breathability and temperature-regulation qualities of fine merino wool makes it perfect for babies as they haven’t yet learned to regulate their own body temperature and are prone to over-heating in synthetics. Merino is also a great choice for babies and kids with allergies and skin irritations.
All things considered, natural superfine merino wool really is Mother Nature’s perfect fibre.
Merino Kids is a wonderful New Zealand company that has really taken merino wool products for babies and kids to a whole new level. The beauty of their range of clothing and sleepwear, sleep bags and sleep wraps is that they are all made from ethically sourced superfine 100% pure New Zealand merino wool. And what we particularly love here at Pop and Oli is that their award-winning products have been proven in scientific studies to help babies and kids sleep better.
When it comes to winter sleepwear merino is ideal. It’s warm and it has a super-soft silky texture that’s both comfortable next to the skin and durable for long-lasting value.
The Merino Kids range of baby and kids’ sleepwear includes gorgeous little pyjama sets, multi-purpose long sleeve bodysuits, versatile leggings and singlets, and snuggly little snoods and comforters.
Merino is not just ideal for kids and babies’ clothing. Just like their sleepwear, Merino Kids’ range of Go Go Sleep Bags are made form the finest quality 100% New Zealand merino wool. If fact, they are the world’s first 100% natural baby sleep bag to use superfine merino wool that keeps babies at a safe, regulated temperature as they sleep. Not surprisingly, Merino Kids’ Go Go Sleep Bags are the top recommended, 100% natural baby sleep bag by parents in New Zealand and Australia.
Go Go Sleep Bags also offer some other great advantages. While you want to keep your baby warm and cosy at night, it’s also important not to let them overheat. This is where the natural breathability of merino wool really comes to the fore. What’s more, the sleep bag design means your child can’t kick it off in bed, so they’re less likely to wake up feeling cold.
Add to that they’re great versatility – they are also handy for use in prams and car seats as well as in the cot – and Merino Kids’ Go Go Sleep Bags are really an all round sleep time winner.
You can see our entire range of Merino Kids sleepwear and Go Go Sleep Bags here.

One of our absolute favourite products at Pop and Oli, are Bed Mates, the bedwetting mats made by a great Australian company called The Midnight Gang.
Bedwetting mats, also known as waterproof sheet protectors or brolly sheets have long been seen as a saviour by many parents. That is why there is such a variety of products around that take the sting out of middle-of-the-night accidents and bed changes.
As we mentioned above, we at Pop and Oli, love The Midnight Gang’s brand of Bed Mates 100% waterproof bedwetting mats, and there are some very good reasons why.
One of the things that make Bed Mates so special is that, unlike old-school mattress protectors, Bed Mates go on top of the fitted sheet. They have a cool wing design that just tucks in under the mattress that makes them so easy to fit.
The real advantage of this is that when you’re stumbling around dazed and still three-quarters asleep, you don’t have to strip the bed completely. Simply whip off the Bed Mates waterproof sheet protector and slip on a fresh one, then drop your little one into a dry set of PJs and it’s back to bed.
Better still, the sheets below stay perfectly dry, so there’s one less job on the list.
Another thing that we love about The Midnight Gang’s Bed Mates is that they are designed in Australia to meet Australian standards. Plus, their fun, colourful patterns and designs are created to appeal to Aussie kids, so it makes bedtime just that little bit easier. The Jurassic dinosaur print and the gorgeous Aussie Bush Fairies print are two that are particularly fun.
As you’d expect with The Midnight Gang’s high design standards, their Bed Mates waterproof sheet protectors are nontoxic and free from PVC, phthalates, lead and formaldehyde. They are washing machine and dryer safe, of course.
Bed Mates are made with a 100% easy-care cotton top that’s not only comfortable for baby or child, but it’s also super-absorbent when those middle-of-the-night bedwetting accidents occur.
There is also another element to the comfort factor. The special winged design means that Bed Mates remain firmly in place throughout the night, even for the squirmiest of sleepers.
What makes The Midnight Gang’s Bed Mates extra-good value is that they are also great for a variety of uses. You can use them to protect other furniture your child uses, such as the sofa, cot or pram. And because Bed Mates are so practical and durable, they are also great for camping trips and sleepovers. I’m sure you can think of many uses of your own. If fact, pregnant mums have found them perfect for when they are in their final trimester and concerned their waters might break in bed or in the car.
The Midnight Gang Bed Mates 100% waterproof sheet protectors come in single, king single, double and queen bed sizes.
Take a look at our range of Bed Mates here.

]]>This is why your choice of baby sleepwear, wraps and blankets is so important. As when choosing any summer baby clothes, we recommend you start by looking at the fabric:
Here are some good starting points for summer slumber comfort.
The good old multi-purpose onesie is a popular baby sleepwear option. The beauty of the humble onesie is that there are so many designs and styles that there’s sure to be one that suits your baby’s sleeping environment.
The sleeveless Papaya Star Summer Suit and the long sleeve Ochre Sunflower LS Romper from the brand G.Nancy are two great summer sleepwear options for babies and toddlers.
Both of these cool Aussie onesies are made from 100% organic cotton (Global Organic Textile Standards certified), and coloured using only the highest-quality dyes and water-based inks, so you know they are safe and responsible. Nifty custom-dyed press studs at the crotch make for easy night time nappy changes. Even better, these super soft and stretchy onesies are designed, knitted, dyed, printed and manufactured in Australia.
Not everywhere in this wide brown land are the nights so balmy. If you’re in a place where the nights can still offer a chill even in summer, the Organic Cotton Onepiece – Grey Stripe bodysuit from the brand Jamie Kay might be a better option. It’s also made from 100% natural cotton, but thicker with a more fitted style to keep the night-time chills at bay.
The natural breathability of a fabric is an important consideration when choosing a newborn swaddle, particularly in summer when babies don’t yet have the capacity to regulate temperature effectively.
Baby swaddles made of soft natural cotton or bamboo are cool and breathable options for restful summer sleeping, at home or out and about.
Take the Secret Garden Baby Wrap from the brand Halcyon Nights, for example. Made from a mix of super soft cotton and elastane, this swaddle is not overly constricting so baby can sleep in comfort and safety. The hand drawn print by Min Pin and featuring a variety of beautiful botanics and sneaky critters adds a touch of fun.
The In The Jungle Bamboo Single Swaddle from the brand Kip&Co is another great newborn swaddle option. As the name suggests, this swaddle is made from 100% natural bamboo that is both soft and breathable. It also has a super cute design featuring wild jungle animals and plants on a mint green background.
Wrap blankets are one of those multi-purpose essentials that, when chosen right, should provide years of sleepy-time comfort.
Cotton muslin is a soft and airy fabric that makes it a perfect choice for a summer blanket that can also be used as handy throw blanket or wrap all year round.
Jamie Kay’s Cotton Muslin Wrap Blanket – Rose Smoke is a beautiful summer-style multi-purpose blanket. It’s made from super soft 100% organic cotton muslin, so you know there are no nasties. Plus, it’s generous size means you’ll find it great for all sorts of uses.
Merino wool is typically seen as a winter fabric, but the breathability and natural sweat wicking attributes of fine merino wool make it an ideal summer fabric as well. Let’s face it, sheep wear it all year round.
The great news is that there is now a fantastic range of baby sleepwear and bedding products made from pure merino wool. Merino Kids is one of the most popular brands when it comes to fine merino pyjamas, baby sleep bags (their very popular Go Go Bags) and wraps. Made from ethically-sourced, 100% pure superfine New Zealand merino wool, Merino Kids products are not only soft and light, they’re kind to delicate skin, they’re easy to care for, and they possess the natural safety attributes of fine wool.
Take a look at Merino Kids’ all-natural range of merino pyjamas, Go Go Bags, wraps and more.
]]>That’s why at Pop & Oli we’re fanatical about using bath products that are made from the best natural ingredients and proven to be completely safe, gentle and healthy for both baby and parents, not to mention the environment your bub is going to grow up in.
We’re big fans of the brand Little Bairn (Bairn is pronounced be-ryn). Little Bairn produces an award-winning range of luxury, certified organic skincare products for mum and baby. The great thing about Little Bairn products is that they’re completely open and honest about the ingredients they use and how they use them, so you know there are no nasties and no surprises.
Little Bairn produces a great range of organic baby washes and lotions, massage oils and powders, and more. Their organic bottom balm is a perennial favourite. Plus they have fantastic products for mum, both during pregnancy and beyond, including all-natural bath soaks, soothing balms and calming mists and essential oil blends.
When it comes to choosing the best baby wash for your baby, Little Bairn’s Organic Gentle Baby Wash is a good natural option for daily use. It’s made with certified organic ingredients, including macadamia, avocado and sunflower oils and aloe vera. The addition of calendula and emu apple extracts makes it great for dry, delicate or sensitive skin.
If you’re looking for the best baby bath and massage oil, Little Bairn’s Organic Sleepy Time Bath and Massage Oil is definitely worth a look. As you can guess from the name, it’s perfect for use in a soothing, sleep inducing bath or for use as a cradle cap by gently massaging into baby’s scalp.
Using a blend of nutrient-rich, organic macadamia and jojoba oils, it will leave baby’s skin nourished and smooth. While the addition of lavender and chamomile extracts help lull baby into a sound sleep.
Little Bairn’s Organic Newborn Bath and Massage Oil is a product specifically formulated to care for delicate newborn skin. What’s makes this particular blend so special is that it’s made from 100% natural ingredients, including macadamia, jojoba and camellia oils and natural vitamin E. ]]>For mum and dad, natural organic baby clothes and sleepwear means no nasties, no irritations and no worries. Better for baby means better for you.
Comfort is at the heart of a good night’s sleep for baby. This is where the natural softness of organic cotton really comes to the fore. Particularly for cool nights when thicker sleepwear is needed, the softness of natural cotton baby sleepwear means it doesn’t bunch, snag and tug at baby while they sleep.
Jamie Kay’s Organic Cotton Pyjama Set is a good example. It’s a slim, long-sleeve fitted style of pyjama that’s made from 100% organic super-soft cotton. This particular pyjama style uses a thicker cotton fabric for warmth. Plus a sweet grey stripe pattern gives it a certain French-style je ne sais quoi.
Australia produces some of the best natural organic fabrics in the world. That’s why it’s so great to see some fantastic organic baby clothes being made right here. They’re affordable, good for baby and good for the environment. It’s a great feeling all round.
The Ochre Sunflower Shortie PJ Set from G.Nancy is one of these great natural baby sleepwear products that are made in Australia. This shortie pyjama set is made from snug-fitting, super-soft and stretchy GOTS certified organic cotton, with a soft knitted elastic waist. And the beautiful ochre ‘sunflower’ pattern is a true Aussie look.
Another great attribute of natural organic baby wear is its breathability. This is particularly true of organic cotton blends. These fabrics are light and airy, but also functional, so they are perfect for getting outdoors and everyday around-the-house use.
If you’re looking for a natural, breathable and durable onepiece then the Harem Romper from Harpa’s Nest is a top option. Made from 85% organic cotton and 8% Spandex, it combines the breathability of soft, natural cotton with spandex for comfort and practicality. These oversized, slouchy fit rompers grow with your child, and with no snaps or buttons, they are super easy to pull on and off over the shoulders.
Bamboo is another great natural fabric option to consider. Bamboo baby and kids’ clothes blends are particularly good for babies and kids who suffer from eczema or sensitive skin.
One great example is Lulu Funk’s Girls’ Undies for Spring. These super-soft and comfortable essentials are made from a bamboo and organic cotton blend that is breathable and with moisture wicking and thermal regulating properties. Designed in New
Zealand, these undies also offer odour neutralising and UV protection qualities. The stretchy nature of the fabric means there is no need for an elastic waist, so you can say goodbye to nasty red marks.
Natural organic baby clothes don’t necessarily have to cost more. There’s now a great range of organic cotton essential baby clothes that are not only good for baby but also good for the budget. With the added durability of good quality organic fabrics, it makes good money sense.
Take Jamie Kay’s Forever Floral Organic Cotton Footed Pants for example. These essential footed pants are 100% super-soft organic cotton. These sweet little pants are practical, affordable and beautiful with a gorgeous floral print.

]]>It is a wonder fibre that has evolved over a million years to help us create the perfect sleeping environment for young children.
The main benefit of merino is its incomparable ability to maintain a comfortable micro-climate between body and bedding. Unlike synthetics, Merino breathes and controls moisture meaning that it has the natural ability to respond to changes in temperature. This unique garment property helps keep young ones cool when it is hot and warm when it is cold.
A unique feature of merino is that it absorbs perspiration from the skin and releases it into the air. This means your child will never feel clammy since humidity between skin and garment is lowered.
Babies are not as adaptable as adults to temperature change. A baby's body surface is about three times greater than an adult's, compared to the weight of his/her body. Babies can lose heat rapidly, as much as four times more quickly than adults. Babies under 12 months have difficulty regulating their own temperature, even in a warm environment.
When babies are cold-stressed, they use energy and oxygen to generate warmth. By keeping babies at optimal temperatures, neither too hot nor cold, they can conserve energy and build up reserves. When temperature is regulated and maintained a baby will become more relaxed, gain weight and sleep longer. This is especially important when babies are sick, premature or low birth weight babies.
Merino fibre actively regulates temperature, protecting your baby from extremes because it keeps them warm when it’s cold and cool when it’s hot. Because merino is 100% natural, there is no need for tog rating, unlike products made from synthetic fibres.
Merino is unlike traditional wool in that each fibre has a silky outer layer, creating an extremely soft, fine texture. Superfine merino fabric is comfortable to wear without itch, and safe to use for babies with eczema, allergies and sensitive skin. It forms a natural micro-climate around your baby’s body, keeping them at an ideal temperature in all climates and conditions and keeping their skin dry and less prone to eczema. It’s also lightweight and odour resistant.
Medical studies have proven that merino improves the sleep patterns of babies and infants. At the Cambridge Maternity Hospital in 1979, Scott and Richards revealed that babies sleeping on merino settled more quickly, cried less, fed better and gained weight faster.
The same medical studies investigating the effect of merino on premature and low birth weight babies found that they gained an extra 10g a day compared to babies that weren’t sleeping on merino.
A number of studies have shown that swaddling babies tends to reduce the likelihood of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Since overheating has been identified as a key factor in many cases of SIDS there is a strong case for using merino because of its previously noted ability to regulate heat and humidity.
Our merino is a fine-spun fabric, making it soft and comfortable to wear. It has a natural elastic property, meaning our garments fit snugly every time.
All fabrics will burn but some are more combustible than others. Untreated natural fibres such as cotton, linen and silk have a very high burning rate. Synthetics tend to be slow to ignite, but once ignited, severe melting and dripping can occur. Merino wool contains natural fire retardants, further helping safeguard your child’s health. It is comparatively flame-retardant but if ignited, it usually has a low burning rate and may self-extinguish.
We use nature's finest materials. They are 100% natural, renewable and biodegradable. Throughout our business we strive to meet the needs of the present, without compromising the needs of the future and we work consciously to minimise the impact that we may have on the environment.
Scientific research findings released by AgResearch, New Zealand’s largest national Crown Research Institute, indicate that baby sleep bags made from natural merino wool are better at maintaining a baby’s comfort and wellbeing compared with synthetic polyester-filled sleep bags - read the full report.
The Sleeping Comfort Study – conducted by The Woolmark Company and the University of Sydney, funded by Australian Wool Innovation – has shown that through the development of a Thermal Comfort Rating System, wool is the natural choice for bedding products.
Combining human and laboratory trials, the study examined more than 30 wool and non-wool ‘over’ and ‘under’ body bedding products by testing them in a range of temperature and relative humidity environments to establish a rating of sleeper comfort.
Wool was the undoubted winner with a clear demonstration that wool bedding products:

]]>Try not to worry about bedtime routines in the very early days, but from about six to eight weeks you can begin to introduce some simple rituals that, over time, will help your little one recognise bedtime and settle more easily.
Here is our way to a blissful bedtime routine:
A warm bath can be incredibly soothing and calming for a baby. It can also provide an opportunity for some skin-on-skin time if you jump in too! If your baby doesn’t enjoy being in the bath, leave it out of your bedtime routine. Remember, this routine is meant to be positive and enjoyable for you and your baby.
Baby massage is a wonderful way to help your baby calm down to sleep. Studies show that babies who are massaged on a regular basis have higher levels of melatonin in the brain (that’s the sleepy hormone!). Try giving your baby a short, five-minute massage with an organic oil when they come out of the bath. We recommend our Little Bairn's Sleepy Time Bath & Massage Oil which contains essential oils to promote sleep.
This is a lovely ritual to begin at an early age. Open the curtains and say goodnight to the moon, or move around the room and say goodnight to your baby’s special ‘friends’. This is bound to become a favourite part of bedtime as your baby grows.
Studies suggest that it is never too early to start reading to your baby! While your newborn won’t be able to understand the words you are reading, hearing you speak promotes brain and speech development. It also provides a great opportunity to sit and cuddle! Choose a simple board book with large, high contrast pictures.
Fill your baby’s tummy with a breast or bottle feed, before singing them a gentle lullaby. It doesn’t matter whether you consider yourself to be a good singer; the soft, familiar tone of your voice will calm and soothe your little one before they lay down.
